Leftists’ Latest Protest — An Economic Blackout
If companies are going to roll back DEI, they “reason,” it’s time to boycott and punish.
One of the first executive orders President Donald Trump signed after his return to the White House for a second term was to end illegal DEI practices, specifically in any field of work under the umbrella of the federal government.
He pointed to the heavy-handed approach by the previous administration to make sure that the work of every three-letter agency was filtered through the lens of DEI. “The Biden Administration forced illegal and immoral discrimination programs, going by the name ‘diversity, equity, and inclusion’ (DEI), into virtually all aspects of the Federal Government, in areas ranging from airline safety to the military,” the EO states. “This was a concerted effort stemming from President Biden’s first day in office, when he issued Executive Order 13985, ‘Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government.’”
The mandate then details how the Biden administration expected each agency to submit regular reports on implementing DEI practices as ordered.
However, as Trump promised in his inaugural address, we are returning to a society of meritocracy and true fairness. You get what you work for, regardless of your skin color, sexuality, or economic status.
As a result, significant moves toward compliance in areas such as the military and education have already been made. For example, Trump quickly issued a pair of executive orders dropping a bomb on DEI at the Pentagon. Also, the Trump administration sent an official notice to every education department head in the country that they had 14 days to remove DEI programs from their public schools or risk losing their federal funding.
As expected, many on the left side of the political aisle are upset about the return to actual equality. Through the successful indoctrination of left-wing universities, they believe that DEI programs are necessary to help those who are not white Christian males succeed in education, business, and America overall.
In a move of protest, an activist group called The People’s Union encouraged all of its followers to participate in an economic blackout on February 28. The stated goal was to disrupt the economic order “to take back control of our economy, government and future of our country.”
The rules of the economic blackout were to resist making purchases, primarily from large corporations like Target, Amazon, or McDonald’s, either online or in person, for a full 24 hours. If there was a need to buy anything on that day, do so from a small business. The primary target of the protest were businesses that had chosen to roll back their DEI policies. The hope was that these corporations would respond to the economic hit by defying Trump’s executive order and restoring these practices to keep their profits coming in.
Others hoped to push the Trump administration to dismantle DOGE and end its work of exposing wasteful government spending by pledging to refrain from contributing to the economy until their demands were met.
Also pushing the protest was race-baiter and professional shakedown artist Al Sharpton. During a press conference in front of a Costco, one of the few companies that has chosen to defy Trump’s EO and uphold DEI in the workplace, Sharpton criticized the president as being racist (shocking) for wanting to eradicate DEI.
Word of the protest spread across social media, and various activists encouraged others to join them for a 24-hour fast from shopping. Ironically, however, in preparation for the day without purchases, they advised participants to shop the day before so that going to the store wouldn’t be necessary the following day.
Who wants to tell them?
However, when social media users on the Right caught wind of the upcoming left-wing demonstration, a countermeasure was proposed — save our own shopping for the economic blackout, and then shop ‘til you drop. One woman shared her plans to go share her “haul” from Target with the caption, “Single-handedly reversing the economic blackout.” Several similar videos were posted on TikTok, with many excited about shopping for a cause.
After the day of “no spending” was over, the question was, did it have the intended effect?
According to Forbes, “Target’s online traffic dropped during the People’s Union USA Economic Blackout on Feb. 28th, according to data from website analytics platform Similarweb.” It says Target’s visitor and online traffic declined compared to the previous Friday’s reports, with Walmart experiencing a similar slump in consumer spending. However, the data also shows that Amazon’s online traffic increased within the same time frame.
Whether or not the protest was a success, most agree that such a brief period would not impact a large corporation or make a dent in the economy overall. Yet, as most involved in the movement would tell you, this one day was just a test for larger spending boycotts in the future.
Newsweek listed the dates for week-long blackouts planned over the next couple of months. During these blackouts, specific retailers will be targeted for a full seven days at a time.
On the Right, we can support anyone’s right to peacefully protest however they choose. And we can credit the activists participating in the boycotts for, at least this time, merely refusing to spend instead of rioting in the streets, looting, and burning buildings to the ground.
However, if you consider it your patriotic duty to support Trump’s move to end DEI policies in America, perhaps mark the dates on your calendar and save your shopping with these retailers for then.
