The Environmentalists Who Cry Wolf
While ecofascists freak out about Trump cutting off federal subsidies, the rest of the country rejoices that he is extricating us from these green boondoggles.
Green energy mandates are a boondoggle, climate change apocalypticism is a cult belief, and the Left’s policies on the subject have largely hurt rather than helped both the people and the climate.
This is something that President Donald Trump understands very well. So far, he has taken steps to curtail the government’s climate change and green energy initiatives — initiatives that are a money suck, hurt the environment they are supposed to be saving, and whose acolytes are constantly preaching “doom” should we not comply.
Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Agreement, opened hundreds of millions of acres to companies for lease and oil and gas production, and ordered the Department of Government Efficiency to implement necessary cuts to government spending.
Democrats and crazy environmentalists are losing their minds as a result. According to National Review’s David Zimmermann, “Environmental organizations are, of course, rushing to accuse the administration of jeopardizing humanity’s future, but their most prominent — and well-heeled — backers don’t seem to be on board in the same way they were during Trump’s first term.” Not only that, but the majority of Americans don’t really see climate change as a pressing issue. (This has been the case for many years at this point.)
It’s also a fact that the Biden administration’s environmental policies were poorly researched and did not deserve the federal funding they were granted. As I noted back in the fall, “A whopping 4% of all climate policies implemented worldwide between 1998 and 2022 were effective at reducing emissions. This is according to a new study published in the journal Science.”
But that doesn’t stop the ecofascists from trotting out their complaints for all to hear. The New York Times is the best example of this so far. Here is the environmentalists’ biggest fear:
And in a move that could have far-reaching implications for government efforts to regulate industry, Lee Zeldin, the administrator of the E.P.A., has recommended that the agency reverse its 2009 finding that greenhouse gas emissions endanger human health and welfare, according to three people familiar with the decision. That would eliminate the legal basis for the government’s climate laws, such as limits on pollution from automobiles and power plants.
The Times then lists some ostensibly great climate initiatives that Team Trump has eliminated.
The Transportation Department moved to revoke its approval of New York City’s congestion pricing program, a plan designed to reduce traffic, raise money for public transportation and curb emissions.
That congestion tax was merely an excuse to rob the people of New York City and drive away businesses whose customers cannot afford to pay the $9-plus tax to get to them. This “climate initiative” was oppressive.
The Times’s next example:
The E.P.A. said it would try to claw back about $20 billion that was awarded to eight organizations under the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in low-income communities.
Does the paper mean the funds that were hidden in Citibank, at least $2 billion of which was clearly a shady payout to Stacey Abrams?
Then finally:
The effective dissolution of the United States Agency for International Development has led to the immediate termination of long-running projects in the developing world aimed at helping vulnerable countries adapt to a hotter planet.
Defending the obviously corrupt USAID isn’t a good look. USAID used billions of taxpayer dollars to fund left-wing projects around the world, and if these were green energy/climate change boondoggles that were halted, that’s a net positive for those countries.
Green energy boondoggles and climate change alarmism have been counterproductive to innovation, the economy, and foreign policy.
Geopolitically, American leftists have been manipulated by our enemies. Russian strongman Vladimir Putin, in particular, positioned himself to become the go-to guy for oil and gas in Europe. And because Putin has influenced environmentalist groups in America, those groups have barricaded domestic production of oil and gas. Consequently, Russian oil exports fetch higher prices. It’s not just Russia, either; China also has a vested interest in American tax dollars being funneled into communist initiatives.
The climate alarmists are the boys who cry wolf. The American people and their elected leader, President Donald Trump, are done with their agenda — an agenda that puts people last in every way.
