Is DOGE Radicalizing Federal Workers?
The Leftmedia speculates on unintended consequences, but what was their excuse during Trump’s first term?
Job security has long been one of the leading reasons for landing a government job. These jobs are famously “recession-proof.” While the tens of millions of Americans working in the private sector must contend with the ups and downs of the economy, the federal bureaucracy has largely become impervious to such market forces.
The most recent example of this was the COVID pandemic. While millions of Americans across the country in the private sector lost their jobs thanks to shutdowns, those working for the federal government faced no such fears. Indeed, many of them saw their work life change as the practice of remote work exploded almost overnight. Of course, this does not include all federal workers, but it does include a sizable percentage, especially in and around Washington, DC. It has been a challenge getting federal workers back into the office, to say the least.
As the General Service Administration recently explained, “GSA’s decisive action to dispose of non-core assets leverages the private sector, drives improvements for our agency customers, and best serves local communities.” Doing so, GSA adds, will save “more than $430 million in annual operating costs.”
However, it’s not simply that more federal workers are doing telework. It also has to do with Donald Trump’s agenda to shrink the federal government. Hence, Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
In just over a month of operation, DOGE has uncovered tens of billions in government waste and fraud. The “independent” U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is the poster child for this waste of taxpayer dollars on the deep state’s agenda.
And as everyone knows, DOGE has drawn howls from Democrats, the Leftmedia, and apparently a growing number of federal workers. Asking federal workers what they do was maddening to both good and bad workers alike. Now, frets NBC News, some workers are becoming “radicalized” against Trump’s efforts to clean up Washington.
As NBC frames it, these federal workers, now facing the potential of losing their employment, are turning on DOGE and Trump, whereas before, many of them would have happily worked in his administration without any complaint or second thought.
That sentiment strikes a tone of disingenuousness for two reasons.
First, with over 90% of the District voting for Kamala Harris, what percentage of federal workers supported Trump in the first place? If the voting numbers are any indication, it may be around 10%.
Second, during Trump’s first term, federal workers sought to organize resistance to his presidency, proudly expressing their intention to resist his agenda at every turn. Are we now to believe that these federal employees have suddenly had a change of heart and are mildly willing or even eager to join the effort to advance Trump’s agenda if not for that annoying email? Please.
This story amounts to little more than adding excuses to oppose Trump and DOGE as they clean up and reform Washington. Furthermore, the majority of federal workers won’t be going anywhere.
