A Democrat Against Democracy
David Hogg goes in whole hog at the grift trough.
He’s not quite the boss of them yet. David Hogg, who parlayed the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting into a political organization called Leaders We Deserve and a role as a vice chair of the national Democrat Party, has ruffled feathers with his recent vow to spend $20 million to primary Democrats in solidly blue districts to bring a younger generation of leaders on board.
At first glance, that seems like a sensible idea. Democrats are always looking for younger voters, and it’s a sure bet Hogg was selected by the party as a representative of Generation Z who has the bona fides to speak on at least one pet left-wing issue — gun control. His reasoning would resonate with a crowd that’s being whipped up by the far-left generational tandem of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders. The New York Times summarizes his thinking: “His party must squelch a pervasive ‘culture of seniority politics’ that has allowed older and less effective lawmakers to continue to hold office at a moment of crisis.” He has $20 million behind him in that effort, which is intended to swing these internecine races in districts Republicans have little or no shot of winning.
“People say they want change in the Democratic Party, but really they want change so long as it doesn’t potentially endanger their position of power,” he told The New York Times. “That’s not actually wanting change. That’s selfishness.” In another interview on his media tour, he told an MSNBC interviewer that his generation is “losing faith in democracy.” Unfortunately for Hogg, he’s backing a party with just a 27% approval rating.
In truth, there are some veterans Hogg would support in a primary challenge, such as octogenarians Nancy Pelosi and Jan Schakowsky, except for the aim of Hogg is to hunt new blood. As a token gesture, though, Leaders We Deserve did pledge $100,000 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Yet there are Democrats quite pleased to maintain the status quo. Boomers and members of Generation X who worked their way up the hierarchy don’t want to see this young whippersnapper causing too much trouble. Consider this example, as revealed by the Democrat mouthpiece Axios: “What a disappointment from leadership. I can think of a million better things to do with twenty million dollars right now,” said Michigan swing-district Democrat Rep. Hillary Scholten. “Fighting Democrats might get likes online, but it’s not what restores majorities.” Another Democrat, who spoke with the cloak of anonymity, said Hogg’s plan was “very counterproductive and counterintuitive.”
The headlines usually reflect the media’s desire to stoke infighting within the Republican Party, particularly as they attempt to drive a wedge between party regulars and President Trump. This is a relatively rare glimpse at how the other side fights like cats and dogs, too.
It also gives us another bit of levity. You can leave it to Not the Bee to find Hogg’s misstep. “Democracy is what put us through school shooter drills and school shootings,” Hogg declared. “It’s what’s put us through the climate crisis and so much more.” As Cardinal Pritchard points out, “Hogg thinks, first of all, that we live in a democracy, and second of all, that ‘ineffective’ Democrats — who he is apparently trying to unseat with some sort of $20 million primary initiative — gave us school shootings and climate change. (The phrase he was looking for was ‘got us through’ but I guess he’s not smart enough to know that.)”
Hogg may not be too smart, but he has $20 million to blow. Intelligence isn’t a prerequisite for Democrats. May we present Hank Johnson and Mazie Hirono as examples. But it looks like Hogg’s smart enough to become a veteran at the grift trough.
