The Patriot Post® · Dems Are Losing in the Digital Age
In 2020, the Democrats used the power of social media to silence the truth and control the narrative. They buried stories like the Hunter Biden laptop imbroglio and even banned the New York Post from Twitter for exposing it. That was a major factor in President Joe Biden winning that year’s presidential election. Social media had become yet another propaganda arm of the mainstream media.
That state of affairs started to change, though, when Elon Musk bought Twitter (which he rebranded as X) and created a platform where free speech was allowed to reign. Like dominoes, stories that were labeled “right-wing conspiracy theories” turned out to be true. The Democrats had a colossal meltdown because it broke their vice grip on power; the dam was broken wide open. Democrats have hated Musk ever since. While the rest of America is extremely grateful, the Left is paying the piper for the loss of control over social media.
National Review’s Christian Schneider recently observed that social media is killing the Democrat Party. “In the social media era, the Democratic coalition’s balancing act has tipped hard toward the loudest and most ideologically rigid participants,” he wrote. “Republicans, meanwhile, have figured out how to use this to their advantage. They don’t have to paint all Democrats as radical; they just have to show the country what the very visible radicals are saying, kick back, and let the algorithm do the rest.”
While helpful algorithms are certainly an excellent contributor to the Democrats’ stumbling, a few other aspects really affect the common voter. One of those is the virtue of authenticity. Donald Trump has that talent in spades. Regardless of what this president is like from day to day (extremely kind one minute, negatively hyperbolic the next), he is 100% himself. This is what killed the presidential hopes of Kamala Harris. She couldn’t be authentic to save her life.
Democrat politicians are desperately trying to revamp their party’s image. They are severely handicapped because they are being led by some of the craziest radicals in their party. They can’t be authentic. How does one defend the anti-Semitic faction of the Democrat coalition and yet proclaim to be the greatest friend to the Jews? How does one assert to be pro-woman but then prop up a mentally confused man in her stead?
They can’t be authentic, but they can distract. That’s how this cringy “Choose Your Fighter” video went viral about a month.
Democrats don’t course correct; they double down. That’s why a figure like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who stands for every radical left-wing cause out there, is the face of the Democrat Party and its potential 2028 front-runner. She represents the Democrat Party, but does she represent a majority of voters? No, she does not. Might as well call her 80-20, with the 20 representing both her popularity and her IQ.
Another example is David Hogg, who, as our Michael Swartz put it, “parlayed the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting into a political organization called Leaders We Deserve and a role as a vice chair of the national Democrat Party.” His position of power further underlines the fractious nature of the Obama-era coalition. Republicans are at least used to disagreeing and being disunited. Democrats are not generally prone to infighting, especially in recent years. That’s why it is interesting to see them tearing each other apart as they grasp for the power that is seemingly slipping away from them.
The Republicans are currently winning because they are not acting like raving lunatics. Even when faced with a potentially politically difficult action, such as deporting illegal immigrants, Republicans slowly unwrap the bandages of truth to reveal the ugliness that the Democrats defend. A prime example is the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was deported to El Salvador. Democrats heralded him as a “Maryland father” with a disabled child at home. The truth, however, slowly came out. Garcia is very likely an MS-13 gang member, a human trafficker, and a wife-beater. With each new story, the Democrats look worse and worse — like people who care more about violent criminals than the safety of American citizens.
The Democrats’ floundering is by no means an excuse to give them any quarter. Republicans must focus and avoid any unforced errors so as not to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
