Goodbye, White House Misinformation Team
Joe Biden’s White House press team may go down in history as peddling more misinformation than information.
“Here’s to the best team in the business,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declared in a post on X referencing Joe Biden’s press team. Really.
Of course, it didn’t take long for KJP’s claim to be pilloried. Tim Murtaugh of The Washington Times wrote, “This ‘best team in the business’ lied to the world about the mental & physical fitness of the president and, ultimately, failed. Their work led to Trump’s huge win, which was a complete repudiation of everything they did in the most important jobs they’ll ever have.”
Fox News got in on the act by noting a number of doozies from KJP:
Memorable moments included her igniting a feud with CBS reporter Ed O'Keefe after she refused to answer his query about [a] neurologist from Walter Reed Military Medical Center visiting Biden at the White House several times that year; saying that questioning Biden’s inflammatory rhetoric about then-candidate Donald Trump after he was almost assassinated twice was itself “incredibly dangerous”; and dismissing videos of Biden looking frail as “cheap fakes.”
KJP and the team epitomized the word “hubris.” Their attitude was, If we say it’s so, then it is so. Few among the White House press corps were willing to challenge or question the narrative despite glaring inconsistencies and obvious lies.
One of the few journalists who regularly challenged the White House and KJP’s narrative was Fox News’s Peter Doocy. He and KJP often sparred over her dubious claims, even to the end. Doocy did offer one compliment to KJP: He thanked her for continuing to take the hard questions. In fact, he could have simply thanked her for continuing to take his questions, as few of the other press members dared to hold her feet to the fire.
That said, the list of deceptions KJP foisted onto the American public is simply astounding. They included everything from the state of the economy, inflation, and the price of gas to the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan to Biden’s vaccine mandates to Kamala Harris’s changing accents to the border crisis. One of the biggest doozies of all is Biden’s mental fitness.
Where was that vaunted group of mainstream media “fact-checkers”? For the most part, they remained silent up until Biden’s announcement that he would not run for reelection.
On that last point, the biggest task for KJP and the White House press team was to continuously uphold and defend the fiction that Biden was fit as a fiddle. Indeed, to accomplish this, Biden only held 14 solo press conferences during his term, compared to Trump, who held 44.
Now, in the last few days of Biden’s presidency, his administration is continuing to run around spreading the fiction of Biden’s being one of the greatest presidencies in recent memory. It’s absurd, but when talk is cheap, one does a lot of talking. The funny thing is almost no one is buying the lies.
Thankfully, Biden’s White House press briefings, which too often resembled some alternative reality wherein fiction was served as fact, will be a thing of the past. At least we still have the videos.
